Every server, switch, and storage array in a data center is connected by physical cabling — and at hyperscale, that's an enormous amount of infrastructure to design, install, and maintain. As data centers get bigger and networking speeds get faster, the people who build and maintain that physical layer are in increasingly high demand.

What the Work Involves

Data center network infrastructure roles cover a range of physical and logical work:

  • Structured cabling — running, terminating, and testing copper and fiber cabling between racks, rows, and network cores, following strict labeling and documentation standards
  • Fiber splicing and termination — precision work joining fiber strands, critical for maintaining signal integrity over long backbone runs between buildings or campuses
  • Cross-connect and patch panel management — organizing and maintaining the physical connections that make a data center's network topology actually work as designed
  • Network infrastructure engineering — designing the physical and logical network architecture, including redundancy and failover paths, for new or expanding facilities
  • Testing and certification — verifying that installed cabling meets performance specifications before it's put into production, since a single bad connection can cause hard-to-diagnose network issues later

Key Roles

Cabling Technician — the hands-on entry point, running and terminating cable, reading and following pathway diagrams, and documenting completed work.

Low Voltage / Structured Cabling Installer — a broader trade classification that overlaps heavily with data center cabling work, often the path people take from commercial construction into data centers specifically.

Network Infrastructure Engineer — designs and plans the physical network architecture, works closely with IT and facilities teams to ensure capacity keeps pace with compute growth.

RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer) — not a job title exactly, but a credential that many senior cabling design roles either require or strongly prefer.

Certifications That Matter

  • BICSI Installer certifications (INST1, INST2) — the standard entry-level credentials for structured cabling installation, widely recognized across the industry
  • BICSI RCDD — the premier credential for cabling design, signals deep expertise in pathway design, standards compliance, and system architecture
  • Fiber optic certifications (from organizations like the Fiber Optic Association) — specifically valuable given how much of a modern data center's backbone runs on fiber rather than copper
  • Manufacturer certifications from major structured cabling vendors (Corning, CommScope, Panduit) — useful since facilities often standardize on one vendor's ecosystem

Why Demand Is Growing

Hyperscale and AI infrastructure buildouts require enormous amounts of network capacity — both within a data hall and between buildings on a campus. Every new facility needs its cabling infrastructure designed and installed before it can go live, and every capacity expansion needs the same. That's kept demand for skilled cabling technicians and network infrastructure engineers consistently strong, even as other parts of the tech labor market have cooled.

Getting Started

If you have a low-voltage or structured cabling background from commercial construction, telecom, or security systems installation, the transition into data center cabling work is usually straightforward — the core skills transfer directly, and BICSI certification is a fast, well-recognized way to formalize that experience. For those newer to the trade, BICSI's entry-level installer certifications are a practical starting point that most employers recognize immediately.
