For most of the industry's history, data centers treated the utility grid as a given: pull power from it, and use generators and UPS systems purely as backup for the rare outage. That assumption is changing fast. AI and hyperscale compute demand is growing faster than grid capacity in many regions, and operators are increasingly building on-site power generation and large-scale battery storage as a core part of how a facility gets its power — not just a backup plan.

Why This Shift Is Happening

A few forces are driving it at once:

  • Interconnection queues in many markets now stretch years, making it faster in some cases to build on-site generation than to wait for a new grid connection
  • Grid capacity constraints in high-demand regions mean utilities sometimes can't offer a data center operator the power they need on the timeline they need it
  • Behind-the-meter generation and storage lets operators manage their own power reliability and, in some cases, participate in grid services or reduce demand charges
  • Battery storage costs have fallen enough that large-scale on-site storage is now a realistic part of a facility's power architecture, not just an exotic pilot project

The result is that on-site power generation and energy storage has gone from a niche specialty to one of the fastest-growing hiring categories tied to data centers.

Key Roles

Power Generation Engineer — designs and oversees on-site generation assets, whether that's traditional diesel/gas generation at larger scale than before, gas turbines, or newer approaches like fuel cells.

BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Technician — installs, maintains, and troubleshoots large-scale battery storage systems, a role that barely existed in the data center industry a few years ago and is now actively being built out.

Energy Systems Engineer — takes a broader view across generation, storage, and grid interconnection, often working closely with utility partners and regulatory processes to bring new power capacity online.

Commissioning Engineer (Power Generation) — tests and validates new generation and storage assets before they're relied upon, similar in spirit to critical power commissioning but focused on generation-scale equipment.

Skills and Background That Transfer Well

This is a newer enough specialty that there isn't yet one standard entry path — instead, people move in from a few adjacent fields:

  • Utility and power plant experience — engineers and technicians from traditional power generation (gas, diesel, or renewable) bring directly relevant skills
  • Critical power backgrounds — data center electricians and critical facilities engineers who've worked with generators and switchgear have a real head start
  • Renewable energy and battery storage — experience with solar, wind, or grid-scale battery projects transfers directly to data center BESS roles
  • Licensure and certification — Professional Engineer (PE) licensure matters for design-level roles, and NETA certification is relevant for testing and commissioning work, much as it is in critical power

Why It's Worth Paying Attention To

This is one of the few genuinely new specialties in the data center industry rather than an extension of an existing one. That means less competition from people who've been doing "the same job" for a decade, and real opportunity for engineers and technicians willing to build expertise in generation and storage systems specifically as they relate to critical infrastructure. As more operators commit to on-site generation and storage as a permanent part of their power strategy, the roles supporting it are likely to keep growing.

Getting Started

If you're coming from traditional power generation, utility work, or renewable energy, look specifically for postings that mention on-site generation, BESS, or behind-the-meter power — that language usually signals a facility actively building out this capability rather than just running legacy backup generators. If you're already in data center critical power, expressing interest in generation and storage work to your employer, or pursuing NETA certification with a generation focus, is a reasonable way to move toward this track from the inside.
